Marijuana Myth #1 – The munchies aren’t real

Of course they’re real. According to a study by Tamas Horvath, a neurobiologist at Yale University School of Medicine, cannabis can trick your brain into thinking you’re starving – even if you’ve just eaten and are in actuality, full. According to Horvath, “we were surprised to find that the neurons we thought were responsible for shutting down eating, were suddenly being activated and promoting hunger, even when you are full. It fools the brain’s central feeding system.”

We know that our brains produce their own cannabinoids, lipids that control things like appetite, sleep, pain sensation, mood and that THC produced by marijuana interacts with our own cannabinoid receptors, mimicking the same chemicals. Turns out, THC also actively flips the switch on our hypothalamus – a small region at the base of the brain near the pituitary gland – that controls releasing hormones, regulating emotional responses and controlling appetite. When the “flip” occurs, instead of producing the chemical that signals to the brain that you’re full, neurons actually signal to the hypothalamus that you’re hungry.

Marijuana Myth #2 – All weed gives you the same high

Not at all. Weed can be categorized into three main “types” – sativa strains, indica strains and hybrid strains and your high will depend on your strain.

Sativa strains often have lower doses of CBD and higher doses of THC and are most commonly associated with producing a cerebral or “mind high.” Other common effects include feeling uplifted, alert and energetic. Sativa strains are often recommended for daytime usage, perfect for social gatherings or physical activity.

Indica strains often have higher levels of CBD and less THC. Effects typically sit within the realm of physical sedation and can contribute to deep relaxation, a sense of euphoria and often encourage sleep and aid in pain reduction.

Hybrids are exactly what you think they are, strains crossbred from varying combinations of Indica and Sativa parent plants. Hybrids can be Indica-dominant or Sativa-dominant or an equal combination of the two.

Marijuana Myth #3 – You can’t overdose on cannabis

False. While you can’t die from an overconsumption of cannabis, you still can overdose and that has major physical and sometimes mental implications. Physical effects typically come in the form of dizziness, nausea, chills and sweats, increased heart rate while extreme anxiety, paranoia and even short term psychosis can also occur. These effects sometimes last for hours depending on how the cannabis was consumed.
