Today, we’re bringing you five anime to watch when you’re high!
Anime has really changed a lot over time. What used to be considered not-so-cool has evolved into a massive phenomenon with worldwide appeal. These days, you can’t go anywhere without seeing some merchandise related to Naruto or Dragonball Z.
That said, popular anime series tend to iterate off each other. It can be hard to find something truly original. Something that really strikes a note when you’re high.
That’s why we’re bringing you our personal recommendations today. These five series range from the mind-boggling to the comedic, but all of them are perfect for watching after a sesh.
Ready? Let’s get started.
Samurai Champloo (2004-2005)
From the creators of Cowboy Bebop and Space Dandy, (two other entries that could go on this list), Samurai Champloo was an instant classic when it dropped. And for good reason too. It seamlessly blends hip-hop with samurai culture, and creates a product that can be enjoyed on various levels. The characters are all likeable, the music is fire, and the hazy atmosphere just begs to be complemented by some green.
When it comes to anime and getting high, this really is the first one that comes to most people’s mind. After all, it’s the only anime on this list in which a character actually gets high! We won’t spoil too much for you, but one of the main characters gets absolutely toasted after running into a field of burning cannabis. You gotta see it to believe it.
Devilman Crybaby (2018)
One of the newer entries on this list, Devilman Crybaby has a lot going for it. It sports impressive visuals with its animation and character design. It deals with some serious themes about morality and change. Above all, it features plenty of gory and satisfying fight scenes that’ll leave a lasting impression on you. With lots to be in awe at, it’d make the perfect viewing experience after your next sesh.
If you do decide to watch, be warned! There are some pretty graphic scenes that might turn off casual viewers, but they’re honestly part of what makes this show so memorable. If you do take the plunge, pair it with a sativa! A high-energy series like Devilman Crybaby demands an energizing smoke alongside it. Try our new sativa-dominant strain The Soap by Trichome Valley.
Mob Psycho 100 (2016-2022)
This one kinda snuck up on me; I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it, but it ended up being better than I expected. For those who haven’t seen it, Mob Psycho 100 follows the story of a young esper, someone with psychic powers. As a series by the same creator as One Punch Man, it should be no surprise that in the beginning of the series, our main character is so OP he can destroy anyone in one fell swoop.
Aside from the occasional trippy visual, what makes this a great show to watch when high is in its parody elements. Mob Psycho differentiates itself by mostly being a comedy, and one that satirizes elements from various other shonens, be it in the characters or the types of struggles they face. All in all, it’s some good, lighthearted fun when you’re high. It’d be perfect alongside our new AAAA indica-dominant strain, Tom Ford Pink.
The Tatami Galaxy (2010)
This is an anime that everyone should watch, especially if you’re in college, going to college, or just left it. It offers a trippy, emotional, and darkly funny look at what it means to be in that headspace. The Tatami Galaxy follows an unnamed protagonist who, after expressing disappointment with his life, is given another chance to live out his college years.
What makes this a great anime to watch when you’re high? Firstly, the visuals are amazing; they blend creative character design with trippy impressionist setpieces that create a meditative vibe. Secondly, its story elements are not only laugh-out-loud funny, but strike an emotional chord that anyone can relate to in some way. All in all, this one will suck you into its world and leave some kind of impact on you.
FLCL (2000-2001)
This is easily my favourite anime of all time. It’s also a great anime to watch when you’re high. FLCL (pronounced “Fooly Cooly”) is a show about growing up. It’s also many other things beyond that. Upon first viewing, you might be confused. You might wonder what any of it is supposed to mean. But think about that stuff. Just focus on how it makes you feel.
Mixing elements of action, comedy, parody, and sci-fi with a killer rock soundtrack and animation way ahead of its time, FLCL is something that must be watched when high. To be honest, I don’t think you should watch it sober. You’ll probably only understand it when you’re high. And if you do, definitely watch it after smoking a sativa.
