Can cannabis help you learn?

When it comes to learning new things, smoking up is probably one of the last things you’d think of doing before. And it’s understandable why; it’s hard to forget about that dude from your lecture who’d stumble in late, reeking of the dankest kush known to man, only to take zero notes and doze off in his seat for the rest of class.

Or maybe he was onto something?

Today, Chronic Haze brings you another foray into the wild world of cannabis’ lesser-known effects. In this installment, we ask: does cannabis have the ability to help you learn new things?

Grab a pen and paper. Class is in session.

Cannabis Does What to the Brain?

Here’s some surprising info: a study conducted by a Harvard Medical School Affiliate found that medical cannabis improved the cognitive functioning of adults.

In the study, participants completed numerous executive functioning tasks. These included the Stroop Word Colour Test, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, and others. The researchers found that, after three months of treatment with medical cannabis, subjects began completing tasks much faster and with less errors.

So what happened? After careful analysis, the researchers reported that cannabis was effective in treating pain and anxiety that would typically have a negative impact on cognitive functioning. Cannabis was found to assist with tasks mediated by the brain’s frontal cortex. This part of the brain is involved in decision-making, reason, expressive language, and other high level executive functions.

This study was one of many that found evidence of improvement in “psychomotor speed, attention, working memory, executive functioning, and verbal learning” in patients with bipolar disorder. Even more surprising: these improvements were not present in patients without a history of cannabis use!

So what do we make of this? It seems that a reasonable dose of cannabis can assist with complex task execution, especially if you’re being hindered by pain or anxiety. And it seems moderate cannabis use coincides with learning, memory, rapid thought, and attention. Who’d have thought?

So How Can I Do This?

As the study observed the effects of medicinal cannabis, it should be noted that the cannabis used was of the low-THC, high-CBD variety. As such, a less indulgent amount would be ideal for reaping the benefits of cannabis-assisted learning.

Of course, getting yourself blitzed beyond belief won’t help with any brain-intensive activity, aside from pondering the meaning of life. But a less indulgent amount with a reasonable cannabinoid profile could be just the thing to keep you interested in what you’re tackling.

There are a couple ways you could go about this. Our new indica-dominant Wedding Crasher is a strong contender. Its balanced ratio allows for a boost in energy and productivity not typically experienced with indica-leaning strains, while still giving you enough relaxation to keep you focused on the task at hand.

On the other hand, if you need a bigger boost of energy, consider our sativa-dominant Super Lemon Haze. Its heady, cerebral effects are perfectly complemented by its ability to mitigate low mood and chronic pain.

Alternatively, you could go for a hybrid strain like Black Tuna to not get too stuck in your head, and really strike the balance between mental and physical comfort.

What’s important to remember is that dose is always important. Going too heavy could result in you just getting absolutely ripped, failing to retain any information and defeating the purpose of this whole idea. Remember, there’s a time to use cannabis recreationally and there’s a time to use it intelligently. It’s definitely possible for you to use cannabis to help you learn.

So next time you see that high dude in your lecture hall, look a little closer. He’s probably taking hella notes.
