Cannabis and tea together are a no-brainer. Both utilize herbs to create feelings of relaxation in users, and each comes with a slew of potential health benefits. It’s no surprise that many cannabis users are tea drinkers, and vice versa.

The world of cannabis and tea is deep and rife with benefits. Today we’ll take a look at that world, and go over how you can seize the benefits for yourself. We’ll take a look at some of the best teas to pair with cannabis, as well as how to make tea out of cannabis itself.

So sit down, relax, and read on.

Pairing Your Tea With Cannabis

Cannabis and tea can be used together for optimal results. In contrast with coffee, which is best used earlier in the day, tea is less likely to give you a caffeine crash and can be used at any point in the day.

When it comes to which tea to use, it’s a good idea to consider the terpenes of the flower that you’re smoking. Mixing relevant strains and blends allows you to make the most of that synergy. Caffeine content is also something to look out for, as the right cannabis strain will complement the caffeine without making you too wired or tired.

A high-caffeine black tea, like Earl Grey or English breakfast, would go well alongside an indica-dominant hybrid like our Justin Trudeau Kush. Its relaxing indica effects will mitigate the tea’s caffeine, while still delivering an energizing sensation that will get your day started on the right foot. Its citrus notes will also pair well with the rich taste of black tea.

Green teas, on the other hand, possess moderate caffeine levels and a milder taste, meaning they’ll go well with pungent, fruity strains. A sativa-dominant hybrid like Black Cherry Soda will pair well taste-wise, and you’ll be able to utilize the energy boost from the flower alongside the relaxing effects of green tea.

Rooibos and other herbal teas boast a strong flavour profile without the caffeine of black tea. As such, sativa-dominant strains will serve you best here. Pineapple Express, with its earthy notes and energizing sativa effects, will pair well with an herbal tea. The pungent flavour of the flower will stand out alongside the strong taste of rooibos, and the complex nature of the tea will complement the cerebral effects of the flower.

Making Tea With Cannabis

If you’re looking to step beyond the range of normal tea, you’ll be happy to know that you can make tea with cannabis itself!

Cannabis has been used as a part of herbal remedies since time immemorial, with records in China dating back to 10,000 BCE. These blends are still used in the modern era and can be acquired at Dutch pharmacies. Countries like India and Egypt also have a history of utilizing cannabis in tea blends.

If you’re looking to make cannabis tea at home, you’ll need some supplies:

  • At least 1g of cannabis
  • A teabag, or some loose-leaf tea
  • A tablespoon of unsalted butter or coconut oil (we explain why here)
  • 4 cups of water
  • A saucepan or teapot
  • A spoon
  • A strainer, coffee filter, or cheesecloth
  • Anything you’d like to add to your tea, like milk, sugar, or honey

Once you’ve got all that ready, it’s time to begin.

Step 1: Grind Your Cannabis

As per usual with cannabis cuisine, start by grinding up your bud. You can use a grinder or some other kitchen utensil, but it shouldn’t be too fine. You really only need a little here, but feel free to use more cannabis if that’s your cup of tea (pun intended).

Step 2: Boil the Water

Once you’ve ground the flower, add the water to a saucepan or teapot and bring that to a boil.

Step 3: Add Your Fat-Soluble Ingredient

Once the water’s come to a boil, add your fat-soluble ingredient (the butter or coconut oil). This’ll be what allows the cannabinoids to bind to the tea mixture. Allow it to fully melt into the water before moving forward.

Step 4: Add the Herbs

Now it’s time to add the flower and the tea. Throw everything in and allow it to sit in the boiling mixture for around 7-10 minutes. Stir the mixture frequently to allow the cannabinoids and the tea to fully incorporate into the mix.

Step 5: Filter Out the Herbs

Once your tea’s done steeping, it’s time to get the plant matter out of it. Pour the tea over your coffee filter, cheesecloth, or strainer of choice, and into your drinking vessel.

And voilà! You’ve got yourself some cannabis-infused tea! By the way, you can do the same thing with CBD strains if you’re someone that prefers not to use THC. Either way, now you’ve got the perfect drink to facilitate total relaxation.
