How Does Cannabis Relieve Pain?

The ECS is comprised of three main components: endocannabinoids – small molecules that activate cannabinoid receptors, receptors – found throughout the body and functionally bind to endocannabinoids signalling to the ECS that an action needs to take place i.e. relieve pain and enzymes – responsible for breaking down the endocannabinoids once they’ve carried out their function. When interacting with cannabinoids, all three components of the ECS work together, ultimately helping to regulate and bring balance to human functions such as sleep, appetite and pain sensation.

THC has analgesic effects which means it ultimately relieves pain by blocking pain signals in our nervous system by binding to the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system and therefore setting off a sequence of events that result in no pain signal release.

Different Types of Pain

Now that you know how cannabis relieves pain, it’s important to get a sense of the different types of pain to better pinpoint your specific cannabis treatment. There are three main types of pain: nociceptive pain, neuropathic pain and central pain.

Nociceptive pain or inflammatory pain results from tissue damage. This type of pain is the throbbing, aching and sharp pain that often follows physical injury. When the body is harmed or injured, damaged tissues call on inflammatory and immune cells to heal and these cells release chemicals and proteins that ignite receptors on nerves causing pain sensation.

Neuropathic pain is any pain as a result of damage to the nervous system such as pinched nerves or damaged nerves caused by disease like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease.

Central pain is any type of pain that arises from an abnormality in the nervous system. Central pain can be a result of injury or can have no known cause at all. Fibromyalgia is an example of central pain in the way pain signals make their way to the brain.
