The Basics: Edibles 101

What is an Edible?

Let’s start with the basic definition of edibles, shall we? Edibles are an ingestible form of cannabis that doesn’t require a heat source to activate the plant’s chemical compounds.

Edibles vs. Flower, What’s the Difference?

When you inhale cannabis, the cannabinoids (i.e., THC) enter the bloodstream directly through the lungs. The THC goes through a different metabolic process which instead of passing through the stomach and then liver, goes straight to the brain.

When you consume cannabis orally, the THC is processed in the gastrointestinal system and then metabolized by the liver. There, the THC is converted to a 11-hydroxy-THC metabolite (small molecule) which crosses the blood-brain barrier giving you a more intense high.

Types of Edibles

The types of edibles available in the market run the gamut from chocolates, jellies, baked goods to condiments (cannabis chutney anyone?), to drinks, oils and tinctures – a dropper applied under the tongue. FYI the area under the tongue is a prime area for quick absorption of substances into the blood stream so if you don’t want to wait around for your cookie to kick-in, tinctures are great as a less intense, quick acting alternative.

When it comes to edibles, figuring out the type of experience you want is important. If you’re looking for more of that traditional high, go with a THC edible for the psychoactive feeling of euphoria, relaxation or maybe even creativity. Want something a little more low key? The CBD edible route will be less intense since it’s non-intoxicating. It’s important to note here that CBD still has psychoactive effects, just not in the same way as THC. If you want a balanced high, there are edibles which contain equal or near equal amounts of THC and CBD. The presence of THC will mean you’ll get a bit of the traditional high that comes with it, but the effects of the CBD will make the high more nuanced, causing a more soothing, and mellow high.  

Dosage

There’s a saying when it comes to weed edibles – start low and go slow. If you’re new to edibles, there’s often a tendency to over consume. Edibles take longer to take into effect so it’s not unlikely (especially if you’ve just had a big meal) that the edible you just nibbled on could take up to 90 minutes before it starts to kick-in, could be even longer before it reaches its peak.
