Today we’re covering the basics for rehydrating your weed – because sometimes dehydration is inevitable. Before we get into it, friendly reminder that Chronic Haze online dispensary is your go to for all your premium cannabis needs with our same day weed delivery or curbside pickup and weed delivery Canada wide (just in case after reading this, you can’t actually rehydrate your weed and you’ll need to re-up your stash).

It’s crucial to note here that when weed dries out, it impacts the overall effectiveness of your smoking experience – think potency and flavour. We don’t want that. The ideal moisture content for bud is between 6% and 9% and cannabis can dry out for a couple of reasons. For example, not properly storing your weed is a frequent culprit or maybe your weed was grown in a wet climate and then transportation to a drier climate dried those buds out. The physical environment to which your bud is stored is maybe the biggest factor in controlling moisture content. If you store your bud in an environment that’s too dry, it will start to dehydrate, again losing potency and flavour. However, if you store your weed in an environment above 65% humidity, there’s a risk for mold growth.

Before we get into the best ways to rehydrate your weed, we’re going to share a refresher from our blog post on 4 Things to Keep in Mind to Make your Weed Last Longer  so that you’re always getting the most out of your bud and your money.

Light – Like our skin, having your cannabis products exposed to light is the quickest way to age it. According to a 1970 study conducted at the University of London published in the journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, “exposure to light (not direct sunlight) was shown to be the greatest single factor in loss of cannabinoids.”

Airflow – The smaller the container, the better it will be at reducing the amount of air inside. There will always be some oxygen that makes its way into the jar after the first open but if the jar can be kept sealed tight, all will be well.

Temperature – Temperature plays a critical role in effectively storing your weed, as it affects the freshness since warm air holds more moisture than cold air. Mold and mildew thrive in high temperatures between 25 to 30 degrees Celsius combined with high humidity so the ideal temperature to store your weed is below 24 degrees Celsius. You’ll also want to avoid storing your weed containers above or around electronics or appliances that give off heat like the cupboard above the refrigerator.

Humidity – Too much moisture can lead to mold and too little humidity in your weed’s container can break down the terpenes and cannabinoids in the trichomes which will dry out the product. That’s why every Chronic Haze jar includes a Boveda pack (more on these below), which “creates a shield over the trichome to protect the terpenes from evaporation.” The shield also helps preserve the fragrant aroma of the weed so you can continue to enjoy your big whiff every time you open the jar.

Now that you’re caught up on the basic ways to store your weed for optimum quality, read on for four ways to rehydrate your weed.

Keep your fruit peels!

The fruit peel (specifically the citrus peel) method is perhaps the most popular way for rehydrating weed. It’s as simple as adding an orange, lemon or lime peel to your weed jar for a few hours and removing it once your buds start to feel moist again. Again, we don’t want to leave in the peel for too long as it may cause mold so really only a few hours should do the trick. Don’t have any citrus fruit lying around? A little bit of lettuce works too (lettuce is 96% water after all), all you need is a leaf or two (depending on how much weed you need to rehydrate) in your weed container for a couple of hours. Banana peels will also work but keep a close eye out since they do rot faster compared to other fruit peels. Small caveat with fruit peels, your weed may take on some of the flavour of whatever fruit peel you use, if you’re not down with some lemony Mittencake Batter maybe go the lettuce route.

The cotton ball method

Technically this method works with any household item that absorbs water i.e. a Q-Tip, a small piece of sponge, paper towel – anything that would fit inside your container of bud. Simply soak the item with water and place the object inside the container making sure that it’s not coming into direct contact with the weed, allowing your weed to absorb the moisture without getting soaked.

Mix up your dry and fresh weed

If you have super fresh buds, a good way to revive your dried out flower is to throw in a small amount of your fresh flower with your dried out flower. Make sure to seal tightly and leave for a couple of hours, once the dried out weed feels moist again, remove the fresh buds.

Boveda packs

Ever get your weekly THC delivery from Chronic Haze and notice the Boveda packs in each jar? Don’t throw those out! Boveda packs are self-regulating disposable humidity packs that help maintain relative humidity. Boveda packs have special exterior packaging that allow moisture to pass through the pack, humidifying the contents of your bud container. How long your Boveda pack lasts depends on the current humidity within your bud container and the quantity of cannabis that needs to be rehydrated. You’ll know your Boveda pack needs to be replaced once it becomes stiff or firm and no longer has its pillowy texture.

These are all easy and inexpensive ways to rehydrate your bud but if you find your stash beyond saving, Chronic Haze got your back with our Boveda packs! Add your 4g Boveda packs to keep your weed fresh!
