If you’re lucky, you’ve never greened out when consuming cannabis. For everyone who has fallen in love with our mail order edibles, you’ll want to keep reading. What does greening out even mean? Simply put, it’s the over-consumption of cannabis to the point where you start to experience adverse effects that do not feel good. Greening out typically happens more often when you’re ingesting cannabis through oils and edibles but can still happen when smoking too much of pot marijuana. Symptoms or side effects you may feel can include but are not exclusive to:

  • Dizziness
  • Severe anxiety
  • Nausea
  • Chills and sweats
  • Increased heart rate
  • Reduced blood pressure

As with anything, moderation is key. Now that it’s so much easier to get access to buy weed online with same day delivery or mail order cannabis in Canada, it can also mean it’s easier to burn through it quickly. Although you can’t overdose from consuming cannabis like you can with other drugs like cocaine or even alcohol, greening out may give you an experience that will put you off from cannabis for a while if you’re not careful about your intake.

What Causes Greening Out?

Everybody reacts to cannabis differently, but the true culprit is the psychoactive THC compound in marijuana. For the full breakdown on cannabinoids, feel free to check out our other article. It’s believed that pesticides, fertilizers, and mold may be contributing factors but even smoking organic weed can still cause you to green out. Your physiological makeup, the potency of the weed, and of course your tolerance all play a big part in which symptoms you may experience.

Personally, I have been a victim of greening out from cheap canna on multiple occasions and as I’m doing research for this article, I’m starting to finally understand where it all went wrong. I’m happy to share my experiences with you to help you avoid what I went through because I can tell you that greening out is something I could do without for the rest of my life.

Low Blood Sugar

Your blood sugar levels play a big part in your everyday health, and smoking weed does not exempt you from it. Nausea, anxiety, light-headedness, and other similar symptoms to low blood sugar can be mimicked when greening out. Now that I think about it, I noticed a big difference when I ate an edible on an empty stomach versus eating the same amount after eating a full meal. I felt a much more intense high when I didn’t eat, whereas I barely felt the psychoactive effects when I ate beforehand.

Mixing with Alcohol

The other time I greened out was when I consumed a small amount of cannabis, but I hadn’t eaten yet (low blood sugar), and I was drinking alcohol at the same time. It hit me like a dump truck, I was not expecting it at all. I was at home, smoked some mail order pot, had a few glasses of wine and the next thing you know, I’m on the ground in the bathroom. Everything was spinning and I was incredibly nauseous – I felt like I was going through a vortex tunnel at the amusement park. Did you know that cannabis has an antiemetic effect? It basically means it makes it harder for you to throw up, even if you’re feeling queasy.

How to minimize greening out:

  1. Make sure you’ve eaten and stay hydrated
  2. Be cautious of mixing weed with other substances
  3. Know what’s in your weed
  4. Consume based on your tolerance

Since then, I have learned (the hard way) what my THC levels should be when eating edibles and I have not greened out since. I highly recommend you do the same when you’re starting out with edibles. Start on the low end of around 10mg and give it at least two hours so you can see how it will affect you. The next time, increase it by another 5mg (or 10mg if you’re brave), and repeat until you find the sweet spot. Want to give it a try? Check out our same day weed delivery or mail order edibles!

Things you can do if you green out:

  1. Stop consuming cannabis
  2. Take deep breaths and try to bring yourself into a calmer state
  3. Drink a lot of fluids and avoid alcohol
  4. Remove yourself from an overwhelming environment if you can safely do so (do not drive or go off alone)
  5. Have a shower
  6. Have someone chill out with you
  7. CBD may help to eliminate the negative effects of THC
  8. Chew on peppercorn
  9. Sleep it off
  10. Remind yourself it will pass
