It’s your first time doing shrooms. But it likely won’t be the last.

The world of psychedelics is a mysterious realm that will mean different things to different people. You might have a good time. You might have a not-so-good time. You might have a really weird time. One thing’s for sure, though: you’re definitely going to learn something about yourself.

Psilocybin mushrooms, or shrooms, are a great way to start your psychedelic journey. They bring you a little closer to the Earth and help you look inwardly. However, once a shrooms ride starts, it can be difficult to grab the reins. If you don’t even try to set yourself up for success, you leave yourself at the mercy of the shroom gods.

That’s why Chronic Haze is here with a very special entry in our periodical: what to do your first time doing shrooms. It should be said, however, that even if you try to manage all factors, things might still go a little off the rails. Such is the shrooms experience. With that in mind, the following advice will at least give you the right foundation for a safe psychedelics trip.

“Set” and “Setting”

“Set” and “setting” (or mindset and setting) are the first things every psychonaut should consider before a trip.

In terms of your “set”, you want to be as relaxed as possible. If you go into this with chaotic feelings, they’re sure to manifest during your trip. Even if your intention is to deal with emotional baggage, your first time will be better if you’re in a more comfortable place, mentally speaking.

For your “setting”, somewhere safe is of utmost importance. At home or a friend’s house is fine; you can make the environment as trippy or as grounded as you like. But here’s my advice: go outside. Somewhere with trees and an open sky, maybe some water. You’ll feel more in touch with nature. It’s hard to explain until you try it.

Bring Friends

Historically, psychedelics have been used in the presence of a shaman. Such an individual serves as a guide, anchoring the experiencer and helping them make sense of their journey. While your reasons for doing this might not be as spiritual, there’s no need to go it alone.

A solo trip might be a worthy challenge for an experienced user, but it’s an overly daunting one for a first-timer. Allow your friends to be your guides. If you’re tripping together, you’ll find that psychedelics can help you to bond. A sober trip-sitter is an even safer option.

Be sure you’re tripping with people you trust, though. Psychedelics have the tendency of bringing certain things to light, making you aware of things you might not have been before. It would suck to have a dispute with someone while in such a vulnerable state.

Bring Healthy Snacks

Listen, I’m not trying to lecture you. I’m just telling you what you’re already about to figure out. Once you’re tripping, it’s pretty unlikely that you’re gonna want to eat junk food.

If it’s your first time tripping, you’re probably thinking this is gonna be a lot like a weed sesh. While there is some mild crossover between the two, the experiences are incredibly different. Your usual munchies aren’t gonna cut it here.

With psychedelics, you’re a lot more sensitive to certain sensations. With shrooms in particular, you end up keenly aware of what you put in your body. Certain foods might seem a lot less appetizing. Do yourself a favour; ditch the McDonald’s for a day. Try some fresh fruit.

Know What You’re Getting Into

From this list, you’re probably getting the idea that shrooms and psychedelics are an overly serious experience. It really doesn’t have to be. Shrooms can be a lighthearted, fun experience. They can provide inspiration, promote bonding between friends, can give you a more positive outlook on life. And they have the lowest toxicity of any drug, so you can be sure they’re safe.

That said, they are also an incredibly powerful therapeutic tool. It’s possible to encounter old memories or buried emotions, especially at higher doses. For some users, this can be an unpleasant experience.

That’s why you must go into this with an open mind. The psychedelic experience rewards hard work, honesty, and courage. Understanding those principles is the first step in beginning your journey.

One more thing: just avoid any type of situation that puts you or anyone else in immediate danger. Other than that, have fun!
