What exactly are cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring chemical compounds found in and secreted by cannabis flowers that have psychoactive effects and provide relief to an array of symptoms including pain, nausea, anxiety, and inflammation.

Research shows that cannabis plants can produce between 80 to 100 varying cannabinoids and about 300 non-cannabinoid chemicals – the two most commonly known and most abundant in the cannabis plant are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

CBD vs. THC

Cannabinoids can be differentiated based on their degree of psychoactivity. We cover the basics between the two in our Cannabis and COVID-19 Anxiety post but as a refresher, CBD has antidepressant-like effects due to its impact on the brain’s natural receptors for serotonin – a chemical that is produced by the body’s nerve cells and impacts everything from emotions to motor skills. There is a misconception that CBD is non-psychoactive, however because it is a mood-altering substance, it’s technically considered a psychoactive – it just won’t give you the traditional high that you might get from THC.

On the flip side, THC regulates neurotransmitters such as serotonin to help ease with over-stimulation related to anxiety and pain.

The overall effects of cannabinoids are the symptoms commonly experienced when consuming cannabis i.e. euphoria, feelings of well-being, spontaneous laughter – which are controlled by the endocannabinoid system.

The Endocannabinoid System

According to A Simple Guide to the Endocannabinoid System on healthline.com, “the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex, cell-signaling system identified in the early 1990s by researchers exploring THC.” The ECS is a complex communications system found in the brain and body that is capable of interacting with the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

We know that the ECS is comprised of three main components: endocannabinoids – small molecules that activate cannabinoid receptors, receptors – found throughout the body and functionally bind to endocannabinoids signalling to the ECS that an action needs to take place i.e. relieve pain and enzymes – responsible for breaking down the endocannabinoids once they’ve carried out their function. When interacting with cannabinoids, all three components of the ECS work together, ultimately helping to regulate and bring balance to human functions such as sleep, appetite and pain sensation.

Types of Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids can be looked at in three main categories – recreational, medicinal and synthetic with cannabis being the most common form used for both recreational and medicinal purposes. According to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation (ADF), synthetic cannabinoids, while they are designed to mimic the psychoactive effects of THC can be more potent and have potentially harmful effects.
