Caffeine, Cannabis and the Endocannabinoid System
Research on the relationship between marijuana and caffeine is still in its infancy. What we do know: both interact with the endocannabinoid system (the ECS). The ECS is a communication system in the brain and body that engages with cannabinoids. It consists of three parts:
- endocannabinoids: small molecules that speak to and engage cannabinoid receptors.
- receptors: receptors are scattered throughout your body. They bind to cannabinoids and then “tell” your brain to react – this is how your body gets the message to be relieved of pain, or soothed of stress
- enzymes: these little guys break down and process the endocannabinoids after the job is done.
These three parts work together to interact with cannabinoids from the marijuana plant to regulate and balance our bodies and minds, helping with things like sleep, appetite and pain management.
In 2018, a study published by the Journal of Internal Medicine found a reduction in ECS metabolites when coffee was ingested. What does this mean? Higher coffee intake can slow does the ECS. Explained naturopathic doctor and cannabis specialist Dr. Shawn Meirovici, “caffeine is a stimulator of nerve activity…and endocannabinoids are inhibitors of nerve activity. It would seem that coffee/caffeine may decrease this inhibitory activity and therefore may alter the calming effect of our endocannabinoid system, making it harder for the body to chill out.” So although the concept of a wake and bake may sound relaxing, it might very well be the opposite – but it all depends on dosage.
In 2014, a study on squirrel monkeys examined the relationship between cannabinoid THC and MSX-3 (a caffeine-like compound). The study found that when the squirrel monkeys consumed low doses of MSX-3, they wanted less THC but when they consumed larger doses of MSX-3, they wanted more THC. What might this mean? For the monkeys, lower doses of caffeine may not have a significant impact on the ECS, and thus did not impact their high. Alternatively, higher caffeine consumption slowed the ECS, requiring more THC to feel the high.
TLDR: Consider skipping coffee if you want to feel your high with less weed, or go slow with your cup of joe as you consume your cannabis. Not your style? If you’re going hard on the coffee, make sure to go in on the weed as well.
Coffee & Cannabis Connoisseur
If you love a good pairing, getting acquainted with the flavour notes and terpene profiles of your weed is a great place to start. Terpenes are aromatic oils that give cannabis their signature scent and flavour. If you’ve ever heard a friend call a joint “citrusy” or “piney”, they were referring to the terpenes of the weed.
Another great way to mix your coffee and cannabis habit is to add drops of a tincture to your morning brew. Another fun way to kick up your coffee? Make it a buzzy-mocha by adding a block of edible chocolate in while your coffee is hot.
There are lots of fun and fancy ways to kick up your wake and bake experience!
