Looking for something trippy to watch? Today, Chronic Haze brings you 5 movies with psychedelic scenes for your viewing pleasure!
Psychedelics, like mushrooms and LSD, have been featured in plenty of movies. These portrayals aren’t always accurate; anyone who’s done psychedelics can tell you it’s not like it is in the movies. That said, sometimes you get a depiction that is accurate, or just plain memorable.
If you’ve been looking for something in that camp, definitely check out the movies on this list. They’ll be sure to keep you entertained, and might even pique your interest in the world of psychedelics.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
While Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas may be one of the most polarizing films of all time, there’s a reason it gets discussed so often. Starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro in their craziest roles ever, the film follows a journalist and his attorney as they go on a drug-fuelled rampage in Las Vegas. They use a wide range of substances from cannabis to mescaline, but the real kicker is when protagonist Raoul Duke trips on LSD in a hotel lobby in a scene described as one of the most accurate portrayals of psychedelics to ever exist.
Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (2006)
Another film we’ve discussed on the blog before, Tenacious D is a rip-roaring good time. Starring funny man Jack Black and his friend Kyle Gass, the film follows the journey of what’s actually a real-life band as they attempt to retrieve a legendary guitar pick belonging to Satan himself. At one point, Jack Black trips on mushrooms in a forest where he meets Sasquatch. The scene is one of the funniest and most memorable depictions of psychedelics, and features a musical number with Jack Black and Sasquatch.
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008)
You knew one of these films would make the list. For those that still haven’t seen it, this installation in the Harold & Kumar trilogy stars everyone’s favourite stoner POC duo as they escape from a detention camp after being mistaken for terrorists. The most memorable scene in the movie, however, is with Neil Patrick Harris. This unforgettable scene sees our boy eat a ton of mushrooms while smuggling Harold and Kumar across state lines, where he sees himself riding a unicorn while talking to the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security. Easily the funniest scene on this list.
Enter the Void (2009)
Definitely the most serious entry on this list, Enter the Void premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival where critics were sharply divided on their opinions of it. Nevertheless, the film is still an ambitious undertaking in cinematic technique and features poignant use of psychedelics in its scenes. Most notably, the film has its main character go through an out-of-body experience, which many psychedelic users will tell you that they’ve experienced. If you’re looking for something a little more thought-provoking, check out this film.
Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics (2020)
This documentary premiered on Netflix around the start of the pandemic and is likely responsible for educating many people about the benefits and enjoyability of psychedelics. It features interviews with celebrities such as Sting, Carrie Fisher, A$AP Rocky and more as they relay their experiences in the realm of psychedelics. Overall, it’s a fun and educational watch that any psychedelic enthusiast or prospective enthusiast should check out.
